Our world throws around the word "love" constantly and carelessly. "Love" is used to describe our feelings for everything from God to chocolate, from cars to pets, from football to family. Sadly, the kind of love implied today bears little resemblance to the meaning of the love in the Bible. 1 Corinthians 13 states the meaning beautifully.
Love is an eternal, essential action.
1. Love is eternal (v. 8-13)
Love is the one quality of the Christian life that is both alive now and forever.
2. Love is essential (v. 1-3)
You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.
3. Love is an action (v. 4-7)
Positive: Love is patient, kind, rejoices in truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Negative: Love is not jealous, does not brag, is not arrogant, is not rude, doesn't seek itself, is not easily provoked, does not rejoice in evil.
The ability to love like this can only come from love's source - God.
